Sam Halaby

Biography

Born in Daliyat al-Karmel, Israel, in 1989, Sam Halaby is one of the most compelling voices in contemporary Israeli art. A self-taught painter, sculptor, and installation artist, Halaby has developed a highly distinctive visual language defined by fearless color, expressive gesture, and immersive environments that dissolve the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and architecture. Raised as the tenth child and only son in a traditional Druze family, Halaby discovered his artistic calling at an early age. Encouraged by his mother despite cultural expectations to pursue a more conventional path, he began painting commissioned portraits by the age of thirteen, using his talent to help support his family. This early experience laid the foundation for a practice driven by intuition, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to artistic expression. Working in the spirit of Action Painting, Halaby embraces spontaneity and movement over precision. His compositions emerge through energetic gestures, layered textures, and richly saturated palettes that evoke emotion through color alone. Whether on canvas, sculpture, or architectural surfaces, his works radiate vitality, transforming space into immersive experiences where color becomes both atmosphere and emotion. In 2023, Halaby unveiled his most ambitious work to date, The House of Colores, his former four-story childhood home in Daliyat al-Karmel, reimagined as a monumental, site-specific artwork, studio, and gallery. Spanning more than 600 square meters, every interior and exterior surface has been hand-painted by the artist, including furniture, architectural details, and even a grand piano. Perched on a hillside overlooking the surrounding landscape, the project stands as a living work of art, where architecture, painting, and environment merge into a single immersive composition. Today, Halaby's work continues to captivate collectors and audiences worldwide through its exuberant use of color, dynamic energy, and transformative vision. His paintings and installations invite viewers into vibrant worlds where emotion transcends language and color becomes a universal expression of joy, memory, and human connection.
