Fredi Brodmann
Biography
Born in Vienna, Austria in 1956, Fredi Brodmann has spent a lifetime observing the world through the lens of humor. From childhood, he was constantly drawing horses, airplanes, cars, and eventually the witty cartoons that would become his signature visual language. After studying under renowned Viennese graphic designer Joey Badian, Brodmann began his career as an editorial cartoonist in Europe. His illustrations, often centered on the concept of time and the absurdities of everyday life, combined sophisticated graphic design with sharp social commentary. One series of cartoons exploring the nature of time unexpectedly led to the creation of his first watch collection, WatchMe, in 1985. Although that project launched an internationally acclaimed career in watch design, Brodmann never stopped thinking like a cartoonist. For more than three decades he applied the same wit, clarity, and storytelling to the design of timepieces, creating iconic collections for leading international brands including Citizen, Bulova, Fossil, Puma, Ventura, BENRUS, and numerous private labels. His designs have been exhibited by institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Neue Galerie, Wempe, and Tourneau. Today, Brodmann has returned to the medium where his creative journey began. His contemporary cartoons distill complex ideas into deceptively simple images, blending humor, philosophy, and graphic precision. Drawing inspiration from time, memory, human behavior, and modern culture, his works invite viewers to pause, laugh, and reconsider the familiar. Each composition balances playful wit with thoughtful observation, revealing an artist whose perspective has been shaped by decades of design while remaining rooted in the expressive freedom of drawing. Published in numerous cartoon books and exhibited throughout Europe in both solo and group exhibitions, Brodmann's work occupies the intersection of fine art, illustration, and design. His cartoons are timeless in both subject and execution, works that entertain at first glance while rewarding deeper reflection.
